Cleaning First
Fluoride treatment is applied after your professional cleaning so the enamel surface is free of plaque and tartar. A clean surface allows the fluoride varnish to make direct contact with the enamel and absorb more effectively.
Professional fluoride treatments at Rise and Shine Dentistry deliver a concentrated dose of cavity-fighting mineral directly to your tooth enamel. The treatment takes just a few minutes at the end of your cleaning, requires no drilling or discomfort, and gives your teeth a meaningful layer of protection that daily toothpaste alone cannot provide.
What is fluoride treatment?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a direct role in how strong and resistant your tooth enamel is. Every day, acids from bacteria and food erode microscopic amounts of mineral from your enamel in a process called demineralization. Fluoride reverses this process by helping enamel remineralize, rebuilding its structure and making it harder and more resistant to future acid attacks.
While fluoride in toothpaste and drinking water provides daily low-level exposure, a professional fluoride treatment delivers a much higher concentration directly to your teeth in a form that stays in contact with the enamel for hours. This is especially beneficial for patients who are prone to cavities, have sensitive teeth, or have areas of early enamel weakening that have not yet become full cavities.
At Rise and Shine Dentistry in Rock Hill, SC, fluoride varnish is applied by our dental hygienists at the end of your routine cleaning appointment. It takes only a few minutes, is completely comfortable, and is one of the most straightforward and evidence-supported preventive treatments in dentistry.
The procedure
Fluoride treatment is applied after your professional cleaning so the enamel surface is free of plaque and tartar. A clean surface allows the fluoride varnish to make direct contact with the enamel and absorb more effectively.
Our dental hygienist uses a small brush to paint a thin layer of fluoride varnish onto all tooth surfaces. The varnish has a slightly sticky texture that allows it to adhere to the teeth and continue releasing fluoride over the next several hours.
The varnish sets quickly on contact with saliva, so there is no waiting in the chair and no trays or rinses required. Most patients describe the sensation as mild and temporary. The entire application process takes only a few minutes.
After fluoride varnish is applied, patients are advised not to eat or drink for 30 minutes and to avoid very hot foods or beverages for the rest of the day. This allows the fluoride to absorb fully into the enamel before it is disturbed.
Who benefits most
Fluoride treatment is especially valuable during the years when permanent teeth are developing and erupting. Children and teenagers who receive regular professional fluoride have significantly lower rates of cavities. Most insurance plans cover fluoride for patients through their mid-teens.
Adults who have a history of frequent cavities, dry mouth from medication or health conditions, gum recession that exposes root surfaces, or a diet high in acidic foods and drinks benefit meaningfully from professional fluoride treatments at their routine visits.
Patients undergoing Invisalign or traditional braces treatment have a higher risk of enamel demineralization around brackets and under aligners. Professional fluoride is an important protective measure throughout orthodontic treatment to prevent permanent white spots from forming on the enamel.
Fluoride treatment is one of the most effortless appointments in dentistry, but we know that getting to the chair can still feel like a hurdle for anxious patients and younger children. Rise and Shine Dentistry is built around patient comfort. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Winnie, our office companion, is available to sit with patients during their visit. Parents are always welcome to stay with their child throughout the appointment.
